As the CBB Program Director, Dr. Butler Byrd assists the CSP department chair with all program functions, including student advising and serving as a partner in the learning community. The program director helps students understand the program philosophy, culture, expectations, and responsibilities of CBB.
Dr. Butler Byrd has been a scholar and social justice activist for many years and has taught and supervised counseling students in the Community-Based Block Multicultural Counseling and Social Justice Education Program at SDSU for 25 years. Her research interests include experiential multicultural counseling for social justice, indigenous healing and worldview, somatic bodywork, multicultural identity development, multi-ethnic student and faculty retention, and community practice. Dr. Butler Byrd earned an M.A. in Education with a concentration in counseling from the CBB Program and a doctorate in Education, with a concentration in multicultural education and social justice from the Claremont Graduate University and San Diego State University Joint Doctoral Program. She is also a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and has served on the SDSU University Senate since 2008 and the Academic Senate of the California State University System since 2016.
