  • M.A. + RLLSC: the most selected option is to earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Reading and Literacy Education in combination with the Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Credential (RLLSC)

  • RLLSC Only: earn the Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Credential (RLLSC)
  • RLAA Only: earn the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization (RLAA)

Combined Master of Arts in Reading & Literacy Education and RLLSC

The combined M.A. in Reading & Literacy Education with RLLSC program is ideal for students who want to expand their literacy instruction and leadership expertise. This program suits those who need an M.A., may work outside California, or plan to pursue a Ph.D. The M.A. can be completed independently or with the RLLSC credentials, supporting professional development for K-12 educators and individuals interested in literacy leadership, including roles in literacy-based professional development. A culminating research project is required for this program.

The Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist Credential (RLLSC) program prepares educators to teach literacy from Pre-K through adolescence and beyond. This program supports K-12 teachers looking to enhance their literacy instruction skills while stepping into leadership roles, such as literacy coaching, program assessment, and professional development facilitation. The RLLSC equips educators to advance literacy practices across diverse student groups and lead impactful literacy initiatives within schools.

Survey of children’s/adolescents’ literature and its incorporation into the classroom curriculum.
