San Diego State University's College of Education offers a variety of STEM education programs, including teaching credentials, master's and doctoral degrees and professional learning opportunities for in-service and aspiring teachers. The programs are designed to help educators cultivate our region's future STEM workforce.

Our Credential and Degree Programs:

U.S. News & World Report ranks San Diego State University's education programs among the best in California. We work closely with districts to "grow" excellent new teachers for the region. Each cohort of students is guided by faculty members who provide social and emotional support. Cohort members share what they learn with one another, creating additional learning opportunities and professional growth.

Master of arts in teaching: mathematics and science education

This one-year, 24-unit program is among the few master's programs in the nation focused on K-12 mathematics and science teaching. Enhance your teaching in mathematics and/or science by working with SDSU’s award-winning faculty. Through coursework designed to connect directly to your K-12 classroom, you will explore students’ ideas in mathematics and science and investigate how to leverage them to support powerful mathematics and science learning.

Professional Learning for Teachers and Prospective Teachers

The Center for Research into Mathematics and Science Education is dedicated to advancing mathematics and science education at the local, state, and national levels. CRMSE is an interdisciplinary community of scholars at San Diego State University engaged in research, curriculum development and dissemination, publications, presentations, and leadership roles in the community.

The San Diego Mathematics Project is a regional site of the California Mathematics Project. Our site provides training, networking and leadership opportunities to support math teaching and learning throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties.

The CGI Professional Development Collaborative provides training, coaching and leadership support for Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) math. CGI is an approach to teaching mathematics that builds from children's natural sense-making and intuitive problem-solving strategies. CGI teachers use specific knowledge of their students' mathematical thinking to inform instructional decisions.

The Noyce Science Scholars Program aims to recruit strong science and engineering majors into teaching and support them in becoming effective science teachers for students from diverse backgrounds. We do this through participation in SDSU’s single subject credential program and through experiences that continue after teachers begin full-time teaching.

The SDSU Mathematics/Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) is a collaboration between the College of Education and the College of Sciences that supports future math and science teachers through scholarships and local classroom experiences.
